Other models

So here are the last of the models I varnished and based in the week my wife was away. These are a collection of small units and single models that didn’t fit in with the other units.

First up are the two assassins, my Vindicare and Eversor assassins.

The Vindicare assassin has a mixed base, with some rubble and also some flock, the Eversor has a diorama base, so just the flock around the outside of the pipe(?) section.

Next we have some old metal models, 5 Imperial Army soldiers and an old Commissar, with missing sword. These may well fid themselves as a command squad for one of my armies, other than that they are just cool old models to have in the collection.

Next up are a pair of Tech-priest Enginseers, an old metal one and a newer plastic one.

In the background you’ll see there are 4 servitors, all of which are have been varnished and based, most likely in time for their removal from the codex. They are pretty useless these days, although they are a useful source of plasma cannons and multimeltas.

In addition to these models I have also managed to varnish my first born Eagle Knights Rhinos and Razorbacks plus my Repulsor Executioner, although I don’t have any photos of these models at the moment.

Statue and Assassins

So, I have quite the back log of posts to get through. As I mentioned previously, while I haven't been posting very much recently, and I certainly haven't hit my self imposed once a week target, I have been busy painting and modelling away in the background.  First up are.my assassin models and the sisters statue, which I think we're first featured back in August 2023! That's 6 months ago! They have been painted up for a while, especially the statue, but just not posted up here.

First up however, is the Vindicare. This has always been one of my favourite assassin's, and even when separated from the rest of the diorama he still looks good. The fact that his gun is pointing downwards is irrelevant as he will always be posted to a vantage point somewhere.

His colours have been kept very muted and dull, to fit with the stealth vibe, that's everything but the tassel on the knife. I reasoned that this would be so that he could place this tassel somewhere out in front of him to act as a wind vane when necessary and so it needed to be a brighter colour but not too bright, hence the blue.

Next up is the Eversor assassin and while black is still the main colour, there is a lot more colour and shiny bits.

While still not overly bright, the metallics as brighter and shinier, plus the various viles of venoms and a such show clearly on the model.

I do love the pose of this model, mid jump, surprising the enemy seconds before it's death, or not as is usually the case in game.

The two assassins side by side, I hope to get all 4 some day but I'm not is a hurry.

Next up is the Sisters statue, that originally came as part of the Warhammer+ diorama. The repair job I did when I removed the assassin is barely noticeable now it's all painted up.

In addition, you can see on the ground where the basing material has shrunk and cracked, which I really like, it add to the little diorama, showing that the statue has shifted on its foundations while it sustained damage.

This is painted up the same as my Sister's of Battle, not that you can tell, as there ended up being no purple on the statue. None of the areas on the statue should have been purple, as it's mostly just the cloth of the sisters that is purple and I didn't want to just randomly add purple, however I still really like the finished results.

As for the Vindicare, yes, he can reclaim his perch, just.

He's a little back heavy but thanks to the gun he just about balances happily up there. I doubt he every will actually use the position in a game but it's nice he still can.

Warhammer+ Vindicar assassin

Just a quick post today. There has been quite a few goings on at home with the littlest starting nursery, family issues and gereral life all getting in the way of hobby time. I have managed to do a few bits and pieces but not as much as I would have liked over the last few weeks. One thing that I did manage to do was order my free Warhammer+ model, just before cancelling my subscription.

Fancy "free" model

So, I finally got my hands on the free model for subscribing to Warhammer+ for a full year. Was it worth it? No, probably not. While I did enjoy a number of the programs, as the animations were actually pretty good and the battle reports were fun and entertaining, for the price I just don't think it was worth it. I also subscribe to the Deployment Zone TV (DZTV) for roughly the same yearly cost and the amount of content that is released each month just shames the GW team and DZTV is mostly run by volunteers, not full time employees. I think that if I resubscribe in a year or two (or more) it might be better and more worth the cost. Anyway, let's have a look at the free model!

Fancy sprue

First impressions are that this is a really good looking model, very nicely detailed and very fun, however, it's not the most practical model to use on the table top! I'm am really torn about what to do with this guy, do I build him as is or do I hack the kit to pieces and make a more usable model? I had initially thought that I would hack the kit to pieces, to make a nice Vindicar for using in regular games, however, now I have the model in hand I am far less inclined to do this.

One thing that I have decided to do is paint up the statue of the sister in the same colour scheme as my own sisters, to tie it in a little more some of my other models. I'm busy painting my catachan characters right now and then inplan on painting up the Deathwatch so it might be a while until I get around to actually painting up this model. Although with the current rumours putting the guard codex at Feb 2023!! My paint table is actually getting clearer!

Making Assassins

This is going to be a short post, mainly just to keep myself on top of this project. so I've been talking about building an assassins cadre for a while, however, I really haven't got any where at the moment. I've got plenty of ideas, especially for the Vindicare assassin and I have plenty of parts for all of the assassins, thanks Toby bits box and the extras from the Dreamforge boxsets used for my MT's.

So, what's the plan? Not sure is the answer. This is mostly due to the fact that I don't have much in the way of bodies, apart from Catachans, which I have a lot of. Now, one way to do this would be to push the fluff away from the standard assassin stuff and in to the realm of a few chosen men, each skilled in a certain form of warfare. I'll come up with the rest of the fluff as I actually put the models together, as yet the fluff is still evolving.

So, what do I have.

Vindicare - I have several rifle options for this one. I've a marine scout sniper rifle but also some rifles from Dreamforge. I think I will be using quite a few Dreamforge bits to make the assassin a bit more unique.

Eversor - this one will be a little harder to achieve as the claw maybe difficult to replicate/imitate. The pistol on the other hand should be easier, using various bits in the bits box. I don't think the main build will be particularly hard for this one, some of the details will be harder to do, having said that, it should be pretty easy to rewrite the fluff to fit the build.

Callidus - while this one will be easier, using a modified plasma pistol and power sword, along with some bits to make up the various pouches. The assassin herself will look very different as I don't have any models that can really stand in, so I will either have to acquire a model or the fluff will be rewritten. If it is rewritten then there will be some major reworking of the fluff to get a burley Catachan to fit the role of a Callidus assassin!

Culexus - this is going to be the hardest assassin to model. As yet I have no idea how I'm going to model this up, there are so many different bits to do, especially around the head, that doubt I'll have the parts I need. This is probably the one build that I am not looking forward to trying to do, as such it will probably be put off until last and knowing me, thrown together in a bit of a hurry, just to get it done!

I hope to get at least some of the models built by the next time I write a to do list, which will be Christmas, so I've got a few months left.

2016 update

So, we're well in to 2016 and things are going well on the modeling front, but I though that I would look back at the new years resolutions and see what's happening.

The resolutions:

1) Try and model up all the missing models from the various army lists. So what needed doing?

Hjaltland LI needed their Valkyrie, which is now built but as usual is not painted
The Hrossey Yeomanry required a Primaris Psyker and purchase a Chimera. The psyker is complete, however the Chimera is still on the wish list.
The Dagr Ormr strike force is now complete, with the addition of a OotF and Standard from the command squad and 2 Sgts and a heavy flamer from the vets.

So part one is going well.

2) Sell models I don't need. Well, this is not going as well, I was planning on selling some metal termies and some of the heavy weapons team, but I've modelled up the termites and thought of a new way to use the heavy weapons teams. Have I mentioned I'm a bit of a horder? So as yet nothing been sold.

3) Try and base coat some of the models. Yep, still not happened, not likely to either with all the DiY work that the wife has lined up. However, she maybe going away to a conferance or two soon, so I may get to sneek in some painting time, just don't tell the wife!

4) Play some games! Well, I've played 2, so not going great on that front.

As for the marines. Well, the knights are modelled, the Disciples are in progress and the Guardians are back on track, well, kind of anyway. I've been planning and plotting for the Guardians and have come up with a viable list based around the fluff, without buying to many more models.

The Assassins Cadre is on hold, I'm collecting bits still, but at the moment, the Disciples are the main focus.

As for new models, I've got BoC and the models there and I'm still looking at getting the transports from anvil for the MT's alongside the new Chimera for the Hrossey Yeomanry. I'm also looking at the new models for the Guardians, namely a couple of Attack Bikes and Landspeeder Tempests, but I'm still not sure. Also there are still no new models that I want from GW, just the renegade game!

As for terrain, I'm going to try at some point to get hold of some foam board and some plans from Confessions of a 40k Addict and bash up some scenery for a table or two.

A game of sorts......Assassins

Well, it wasn't a game of 40k, but it was a game in the 40k universe. I was down at the new club the other week and there was a game of Assassinorum Execution Force going. I was quite keen to get a game of this when I saw the box sitting on the side at the club and I wasn't disappointed.

The models are great, I really like the new assassin models, even more so now I've seen them in the flesh. I wont be rushing out to buy any of them though, as I'm going to kit bash some together so that they fit in more with the armies that I have and that I will be using them with, making them more like hard-core special vets then brainwashed assassins. First up will be the Vindicare assassin, but the others will follow. The Chaos models are fairly basic. The marines are basic push fit models, nothing fancy and no options, just old school push fit models and the cultists are straight out of the DV box set, no changes at all. The Chaos Lord on the other hand is a very detailed model and looks very nice, even if there are no options to it, not that I think you need any as I wouldn't change it, apart from the face, which is just a little silly for my liking.

On to the game though, and personally, what a game. Its easy to learn and play and fast and fun paced, all the things you want in a game. It also can be played on your own, which while being slightly sad that you have to play on your own, also means that you can challenge yourself and try out different things. This is possible because the Chaos models move around by themselves, well, you have to move them but the dice decide all the movement patterns, so unless you just ignore the dice, you never know quite what's going to happen.

In our game we had 3 assassins, the Vindicare, the Eversor and the Callidus assassins. I played the Eversor assassin and did pretty well, although I really wanted to blow myself up at the end, I didn't get the chance! Maybe next time. We won the game quite easily in the end, mostly because the others had played the game a few times and they knew what needed to happen, although we did run in to a few problems that could have caused us problems, such as several marines appearing just at the end, a turn earlier and they would have been all over us and caused us lots of problems as we couldn't have handled all of them and got through to where we needed to be. What also helped was that we had a good idea about how to take down the Chaos Lord, which worked out quite well.

All in all, I would recommend the game to anyone. Yes, it is quite pricey as a stand alone game, but as a deal containing the models for regular games and as a stand alone game, its a very good deal.
